ChatGPT Explained in 5 Minutes

ChatGPT explained simply for Indian seniors — comparison with Gemini, Claude, Copilot
TL;DR: ChatGPT is a chat-style AI assistant made by OpenAI, launched November 2022. The free version works in India in Hindi, Marathi and English. It is excellent at writing, summarising, translating, planning and explaining — and poor at live information and personal data. Free tier is enough for most for 3-6 months.

Five minutes. That is all you need to understand what ChatGPT actually is, who made it, what it costs in India, and what you can do with it today. No technical talk.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a chat-style AI assistant. You type a question or instruction in plain English (or Hindi, Marathi, etc.) and it writes a useful answer in seconds. It can draft letters, summarise documents, plan trips, explain confusing topics, translate and brainstorm. It is the most widely used AI tool in the world, with over 700 million weekly users in 2026.

Who made it?

ChatGPT is made by OpenAI, a company based in San Francisco. It launched in November 2022 and went from zero to 100 million users in two months — the fastest-growing product in technology history. The current model in 2026 is far more capable than the original launch version.

How does it work, in one paragraph?

ChatGPT was trained on a huge amount of text from books, websites, articles and conversations. From all that data it learned the patterns of how humans use language. When you ask it something, it predicts the next word, then the next, then the next — billions of times per minute — to produce a coherent answer. It is not "thinking" in the human sense. But the result is good enough to feel like a conversation with a well-read assistant.

What does it cost in India?

  • Free version: Excellent quality. No credit card. Works in all major Indian languages. Unlimited use within fair limits.
  • ChatGPT Plus: Around ₹1700 per month. Adds the latest model, image generation, faster speed, voice mode and longer memory.
  • ChatGPT Team: Around ₹2500 per user per month. For small teams. Adds shared workspace.

For most Indians, the free version is enough for the first three to six months.

Five things ChatGPT is excellent at

  1. Writing. Letters, emails, complaints, RTIs, condolence messages, festival greetings.
  2. Summarising. 30-page insurance documents into one paragraph; long PDFs into bullet points.
  3. Translating. English to Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Bengali — and back — at near-native quality.
  4. Planning. Trip itineraries, weekly menus, project schedules, study plans.
  5. Explaining. Medical reports, legal terms, technical news, English slang — in plain language.

Three things ChatGPT is poor at

  1. Live information. Today's stock prices, scores, election results — use Google instead.
  2. Specific personal data. Your bank balance, your court case status, your local officer's name — it does not know.
  3. Making decisions. Medical, legal, financial choices need a real professional. ChatGPT prepares you, not decide for you.

How to access it

Two ways. On any browser visit chat.openai.com. Or install the official ChatGPT app from the App Store or Play Store — the publisher must say "OpenAI". Beware of clones with similar names. Both web and app work with Indian mobile numbers and Gmail accounts.

Voice mode

On the mobile app, tap the small headphone icon. Now you can speak in English, Hindi or Marathi and ChatGPT will reply by voice. This single feature has made ChatGPT accessible to millions of Indian seniors who cannot type quickly.

Is it safe?

Mostly yes. Three rules: never share Aadhaar, OTPs or passwords; never paste full medical or financial records without removing identifiers; assume what you type can be seen by OpenAI for service-improvement purposes. Beyond that, ChatGPT cannot break your phone, steal information you have not given it, or infect anything.

One prompt to try right now

Open ChatGPT and type:

"In 200 words, summarise what ChatGPT is and what an Indian retired professional can do with it this week."

Read the answer. Notice the quality. Notice the speed. That is ChatGPT in five minutes — and the start of a new daily habit.

ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude vs Copilot

ChatGPT is the most famous, but it is not the only one. Three other tools deserve a place on your phone. Each has small strengths. Try ChatGPT first; if you find a weakness, you will know which of the others fills the gap. The table below sums up the differences for an Indian senior user.

Common questions I hear at workshops

Will ChatGPT replace my brain?

No. It is a faster typist and a wider-read library. The judgement, decisions and life experience remain yours. Most seniors find their thinking sharpens because ChatGPT handles routine drafting and frees the mind for real questions.

Is my data safe?

Mostly yes, if you follow three simple rules — never paste Aadhaar, OTP or bank passwords; never share someone else's medical records without permission; assume OpenAI staff can read what you type for quality checks. Treat it like a postcard, not a sealed letter.

Does it work in Marathi?

Yes, fluently. You can type in Marathi script or in Roman Marathi like "majha lift kharab aahe". The reply comes in proper Marathi with correct grammar. Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Gujarati and Kannada also work very well.

Can it make mistakes?

Yes — and confidently. ChatGPT sometimes invents Section numbers, doctor names or historical dates. Always verify anything important from an official source like income-tax.gov.in, mygov.in, or your actual professional advisor.

What if I'm offline?

ChatGPT needs internet. There is no offline mode. But the mobile app remembers your past chats so you can re-read old answers without internet — useful in trains or during a power cut.

Your first conversation — a worked example

Let me show you what a real first conversation looks like. Suppose your grandson is turning 10 and you want to plan his birthday party. You open ChatGPT and type this:

"You are a party planner for Indian families. Plan a birthday party for my grandson Aarav turning 10 in Mumbai. Budget ₹15,000. 20 children, vegetarian only, at our 2BHK flat. Suggest theme, food menu, 4 games, and decoration list."

Within 10 seconds you will get something like this:

Theme: Space Explorer (popular with 10-year-olds, easy decor).
Menu (₹6,000): Veg sandwiches, paneer tikka, pav bhaji, chocolate cake, Frooti, gulab jamun.
Games (₹2,000 prizes): Musical chairs, treasure hunt with planet clues, balloon stomp, pin-the-rocket.
Decoration (₹4,000): Star foil balloons, black-and-blue streamers, glow stickers, "Happy Birthday Aarav" banner.
Return gifts (₹3,000): Small space puzzle book + Cadbury bar per child.

Notice three things. First, it stayed within your ₹15,000 budget. Second, it remembered Aarav's name and used it. Third, the suggestions are practical — pav bhaji, not pizza. You can now reply: "Make the food more South Indian" or "Suggest 3 cake shops near Andheri" and the conversation continues.

3 things to try in the first 10 minutes

  • Explain in Marathi/Hindi: Paste a news headline you read this morning and type "Samajav he marathi madhe saadya bhashet" (Explain this in simple Marathi). You will see ChatGPT speak your language.
  • Draft a 4-line WhatsApp reply: "Write a polite 4-line WhatsApp reply to my brother-in-law who invited us to a wedding I cannot attend due to my knee surgery on the same date." Read the reply — it will sound like you wrote it.
  • Translate a headline: Copy any English news headline from The Hindu or Times of India and type "Translate to Hindi for my mother who reads only Devanagari." Within seconds you have a Hindi version she can read.
